When a film wants to be real to life, and shows us what life is all about, they either succeed or don't. This film is in the latter. Although the acting is first rate, the story doesn't wash. You have a young man ( looking like a younger Jackie Chan ), who finds out is gay and joins the club , The Bathhouse. So far so good, he then falls in love with the local hunk, Chris. Chris like most men wants to share his body with as many ( in this case ) men as he can. The director then cuts away from the story to show us how in real life these people meet, thru the internet, at the park, cell phones etc. My question is, thru out the whole of the film, the hero ( if you like ) manages to leave his parents, not have a job, go to the Bathhouse, have sex with every man he meets, and he manages to do this without spending any money, or worse get a disease. Does this mean that all gays in the Philippines don't have to have money. You walk around Manila and say your gay and people feel sorry for you and give you money. Even better all gays are clean and without aids. The film is helped by the Aids counsel in the Philippines. Nothing like that is mentioned in the film.

He initially stopped pursuing the story as he felt guilty of exploiting the people in the sex video to further his career. He later changed his mind when he began hearing rumors that the girl in the video had killed herself over the unwanted attention. He said pursued the story to show that there is life after such Internet infamy

"You must be really sick in the head if you get aroused by this movie" ~Nick Tiongson, former MTRCB head during the forum at the UP Film Institute before the film itself, March 7, 2008. The film has nudity and scenes that border on pornographic but they are not the story itself. A deeper and sadder truth envelopes the story, serving as eye openers to the socio-cultural reality of the Philippines. Toro is a story about a guy who grew up not knowing how else to waste his life or to make a living having been brought up by a prostitute. Rolly (Paolo Rivero) fears his younger brother might end up like himself who earned his living by performing "live shows" with his colleagues who included Gigi (Klaudia Koronel), Rosita (Ana Capri), Jojo (Marcus Madrigal). Snippets of the lives of Rolly's friends are also shown, adding to the complications in the story. Gigi dreams of working in Japan but was nearly able to begin her application. Rosita tries to take her life over and over in the grief of never being able to hug or talk to her son who was adopted after birth by a family that never wanted the real mother to come and cause chaos in the child's life. Former toro performers, now leading a chaste life with their daughter are forced to return to their former occupation as construction work declines in employment. In the year 2000, this movie became a loud controversy. It irked the conservatives and personalitites of the Church. Its message, the essence of the story was prevented from reaching the people who should have been shown the truth. Klaudia Koronel Paolo Rivero Ana Capri
